Rosario Dawson Added to Netflix’s Daredevil Cast

It looks like Netflix’s Daredevil has its first strong female lead in Rosario Dawson. But the real question is, “Who will she play?”

The first women that come to mind when you think of Daredevil are Elektra and Karen Page, two very different women in Matt Murdock’s very troubled life. But according to Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television, “Rosario Dawson is one the most charismatic, talented and powerful actresses in Hollywood, so she was always at the top of our list for ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’. Her role in the series is absolutely critical to Matt Murdock’s journey to become the hero we know as Daredevil.” Beyond that, according to Marvel, all we know is that she plays “a pivotal role, appearing in multiple episodes.”

This also means that at least part of this 13 episode Netflix exclusive series will be somewhat of an origin story that will re-establish the character, wiping away any traces of Affleck, especially considering that he’s Batman now. Both Elektra and Karen are part of Daredevil’s early life, but without giving too much away, both mess him up in ways that might be a bit too soon to introduce in a series like this. There is talk that she could be Echo, a deaf woman who discovers Matt’s secret and becomes as much of a badass in her own right, but most people are likely making that assumption based on the color of Dawson’s skin. I think Rosario would be great in the part and I know she wouldn’t mind being more than a standard love interest/damsel in distress, considering what a geek she already is, so there’s a very good chance she could be Maya Lopez aka Echo. Of course, she could also be someone completely new, who will make an impact on Daredevil’s (Charlie Cox) life down in the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen as he faces off against the Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio).

What do you think? Is Rosario Dawson a great pick for the new Daredevil series? So far, I think this cast is shaping up pretty nicely.
