Marvel’s Doctor Strange Gets a Director – Scott Derrickson

It’s been teased for years and the good Doctor was recently name-dropped in this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it looks like Marvel is finally moving ahead with Doctor Strange by snagging a director in Scott Derrickson.

Best known for Deliver Us From Evil and Sinister, Scott’s resume will hopefully bring the first real hints of the horror genre to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No, 2005’s mostly forgotten and rarely seen Man-Thing doesn’t count. And I’m not counting 1998’s Blade, simply because it was made before the current interconnected Marvel Universe began. If Blade entered the Marvel Universe today, he would likely not be played by Wesley Snipes.

Still up for grabs is the role of the title character of Doctor Strange, the former wealthy, self-centered neurosurgeon who lost the use of his hands in a car accident, sending him on a quest to find a new life, only to come face to face with the Ancient One, who trains him as this reality’s Sorcerer Supreme. Hopefully, Marvel’s big splash into the realm of magic (beyond the godly science aspect of Thor’s films) will be tinged with more than a little horror, introducing a whole new level of storytelling and characters to the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Here’s Scott’s official announcement on his hiring via Twitter:

What do you think? Is Scott Derrickson the man to take on Doctor Strange? What are you most looking forward to in his cinematic interpretation?
