Godzilla Director Gareth Edwards Takes on Star Wars Spinoff

Fresh off the release of his Godzilla blockbuster, Gareth Edwards has been tapped to take on that beloved galaxy far, far away as the director of an as-yet unnamed Star Wars spinoff film, according to a story that The Hollywood Reporter broke late yesterday.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards in an official statement press release after THR broke the news.

Scheduled for a December 16, 2016 release date, one year after Star Wars Episode VII bows, fans have speculated that the film could feature a solo adventure from Boba Fett, Yoda, Han Solo, or Luke Skywalker, but no one knows for sure (except Gareth and Lucasfilm). But considering that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are already writing and producing the spinoff installments, it seems odd that Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) is signed up to write the Gareth Edwards directed film. It could very well be a completely new, yet to be guessed entry into the Star Wars movie mythos.
