Drew Goddard Drops Out of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix

Marvel just isn’t having a good weekend. Drew Goddard has stepped down as showrunner for Netflix’s Daredevil series, less than 24 hours after Edgar Wright dropped out of his directing commitment to Marvel’s Ant-Man film.

This situation seems to be a bit different than Wright’s, as far as we can tell. Goddard was also committed to helming Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man Sinister Six spinoff, which left him little time to balance both directing a major film and writing/directing/producing/overseeing the launch of a major character in Marvel’s first foray into online television universe building. When a decision had to be made, Goddard chose his Spider-Man responsibilities.

But all is not lost, as his replacement (another Buffy alum and old pal) has already been named as his successor. Steven S DeKnight, the showrunner for Starz’ recently ended Spartacus series, is taking the reigns of Daredevil. DeKnight already has some superhero experience as he has spent some time as an executive producer and writer on the CW’s Smallville for the Distinguished Competition, so it looks like we’re still in good hands when it comes to ol’ hornhead.

What do you think about the happenings among the heads of Marvel’s biggest, newest, and quite possibly, riskiest projects? Could these shakeups lead to better things for the Cinematic House of Ideas?
