C2E2: Marvel Decides to Celebrate Their 100th Anniversary 47 Years Early

Marvel is only just celebrating their 75th anniversary along with a few of the 50th anniversaries of many of their most popular characters in recent years (Spider-Man in 2012, Avengers and the X-Men in 2013, and Daredevil this year, just to name a few), but why not celebrate their 100th anniversary while they’re at it?

During Marvel’s “Next Big Thing” panel at C2E2 on Saturday, they gave fans a peek at a series of 5 one-shots focused on the heroes we know and love 47 years into our future. Of course, the Marvel universe and its characters will probably have only aged 4 or 5 years by then, but that doesn’t matter. Apparently, Cyclops will take another shot at getting married to another psychic (not too smart, Slim), the Guardians of the Galaxy will apparently take on “Silver Galactus”, the Kingpin gets a venomous upgrade to take on Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four probably get a whole new roster, and the Avengers apparently need Beta Ray Bill, Rogue, and a black mohawked Sorcerer Supreme to take on a swarm of moloids.

Yes, this is apparently another set of “What If?” type stories that are actually “Could Be?” stories, despite the fact that in 2061, you can bet that the current editor-in-chief (a cyborg clone of Stan Lee – or possibly the real one – no one will know) will have a very different view of the characters we know and love today and how to sell them to the kids who read them via corneal implants (that old-timey digital comics format will be SO dead by 2045).

Here are the creators who will be bringing us these potentially historic set of Marvel stories:

  • Spider-Man – writer Sean Ryan and artist In-Hyuk Lee
  • The Avengers – writer/artist James Stokoe
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – writers Andy Lanning and Ron Marz and artist Gustavo Duarte
  • X-Men – writer Robin Furth and artist Jason Masters.
  • Fantastic Four – writer Jen Van Meter and artist Joanna Estep

What do you think? Will you be picking up this set of truly before-their-time comics?
